NCC has ‘missed the boat’

Nelson MP Nick Smith has asked for a ‘please explain’ from Nelson City Council after it failed to apply for funding to extend the region’s cellphone and broadband coverage. Nelson Weekly reported last month that Nelson had not applied for the $50 million in available grants, while Tasman District Council used the help of the Nelson EDA to prepare its bid for a slice of the cash. Of the 67 territorial authorities in the country, Nelson was one of only four that didn’t apply for the funding, because the application “would come at some cost to council”. In a letter to Nelson mayor Rachel Reese and Nelson City Council CEO Clare Hadley, Nick says he is concerned that the council had “missed the boat” in regards to the funding.

“My concern is that we do have significant issues with both the rollout of broadband to more isolated areas as well as mobile blackspots, and that for a region like Nelson improved connectedness is vital to the region’s future.” In the letter, Nick says the ministry and residents prompted the council to apply “but these were ignored”. “Is it that the council is unaware of these deficiencies in our communications, or is it that council does not appreciate the strategic importance of these issues to our community? “My frustration is that I work hard as an MP and cabinet minister to try and

ensure funds of this sort are established to support provincial areas like Nelson, and I am disappointed when these opportunities are not taken up in my own area,” he says. Clare Hadley, in a letter back to the MP, says Nelson’s blackspot issues are minor compared to other regions and the cost of applying for the fund would be significant if some of the funding wasn’t granted to Nelson. “Whilst Nelson has some mobile blackspots, these are really service provider issues and not a matter for council,” she wrote in a letter provided to the Weekly. “We felt that this was one time that our participation was not a priority.”

Top cop excited about new job Simon Bloomberg

Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly had no intention of applying for the job as Nelson’s top cop when he took on the role as Nelson Bays Police Acting Area Commander after Steve Greally left earlier this year. But Matt enjoyed working with the area commander’s “high quality team” so much he soon changed his mind and applied for – and got – the job. Matt started his first official day in the role on Monday and is looking forward to the challenges ahead. “I had no intention of applying for the role because I loved the job I was already doing. I’m not really an ambitious career person either, but once I started in the job I realised that I enjoyed the challenges that keep coming at you from different directions.” Matt also had reservations about the demands of the job impact-

ing on his other job as a solo father of a seven-year-old daughter. “I went on a school trip with my daughter to the museum and she said to me that evening, ‘Dad you spent all you time on the phone’. Initially I blamed that on the job, but then I thought I have three very good senior sergeants and I could have turned my phone off. So it wasn’t about the role, it was how I managed it.” Interestingly, Matt, who was born and raised in Nelson where he attended Nayland College, started his policing career in the UK after “a six-month OE turned into six years”. He spent two years as a constable in Man-

chester before returning to New Zealand in 1996. Matt was posted to Auckland, Oamaru, West Coast and then Wellington, before returning to Nelson where he spent time as district manager of deployment and then, prevention, before stepping up to the top job. He says he initially joined the police because “I like helping people and lots of variety in my work”. Although Matt says he is “still getting a feel for the role” he has some ideas he would like implement. He has already initiated a “health check of how we are doing things across the business”. “We are doing more than consulting, we are getting the ideas from our staff rather than imposing our ideas on them. We are putting it onto the staff and they are coming up with the ideas. We’ll try them and see if they work - it just makes sense to me.”

Beautiful snow caps cold weekend Jacob Chandler A winter wonderland of snow and ice blanketed parts of the region this weekend, including St Arnaud and parts of State Highway 7. There were even reports of snow falling in Tahunanui on Sunday night, but Metservice meteorologist Stephen Glassey says it was most like “graupel”, a type of fine hail. “Lots of people mistake it for snow because it’s white and frozen.” It was definitely snow at St Arnaud though, and Lake Rotoiti Water Taxi operator Hamish Simpson says plenty of visitors were playing in the snow which fell all around the lake, township and walking tracks. “On Friday I was out doing kayaking and a few exercises on the lake, so we were out in the thick of the snow when it came in. It wasn’t windy or anything but it was pretty thick snow,” he says. “On Saturday at around 8am, I took the snowboard out and played around on the streets of St Arnaud before the cars got to it.” Hamish also operates an ice skate hire business but says the frosts came too late for the pond to be frozen enough to

Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says Sunday was the best day of the season yet for the field. “It was beautiful, very nice clear sunny day. The cold temperatures were great because it keeps the snow nice and dry and light, you couldn’t ask for better really.” He says the field was “loaded” with people in one of the busiest days of the season yet. With snowfalls late Friday, the roads leading up to the ski area were icy and Jono says it was lucky people were able to get through for Saturday. The field is expecting a couple more sunny days before more snowfalls later in the week. The snow and didn’t bring joy to everyone, though. Those

travelling through the Lewis Pass on State Highway 7 had to detour or face a long wait, as snow closed the road. Tahunanui resident Sharon Knight was driving to Hanmer for a holiday with friends and says she became frustrated by the closure. “Neither of the signs in Wakefield or Murchison said the Lewis Pass was closed. It took us ten hours to get to Hanmer,” she says. Nelson police didn’t have too many ice-related incidents to worry about over the weekend, but a milk tanker did become stuck on Takaka Hill reducing the road to one lane. For more snow photos, visit

Car stolen from Haven Rd: A 20 year old coffee worker was “absolutely devastated” that his car had been stolen for the second time in 12 months. The car was taken from the Haven Rd parking bay outside Sublime Coffee on Friday. This was the second time Ben McLeod had that car stolen. Last year it went missing from outside his parent’s house in Stoke, but was found ten days later in Washington Valley. Ben’s mum, Peta McLeod, says he was “absolutely devastated.” “He’s leaving Nelson in a few weeks to go and work with orphans in Malawi with his girlfriend and he was going to sell the car to his brother to help fund the trip.”

Our bike tracks rated amongst the world’s best Simon Bloomberg

It’s official. Nelson has some of the best mountainbiking in the world and that’s good news for tourism. Last week the US-based International Mountain Bicycling Association gave the region’s network of tracks a Gold Ride Centre rating. IMBA trails specialist Jason Wells assessed Nelson’s tracks last month after Nelson’s Mountainbike Trails Trust applied to have the region recognised as an IMBA Ride Centre. On Thursday, the internationally recognised organisation announced that it rated Nelson as one of the world’s few Gold level Ride Centre mountainbiking destinations. IMBA said: “The range of trail types is amazing, from gentle, family-oriented trail riding to fullon downhill runs, backcountry adventures and everything in between. Even better is that most of those trails are easily accessible, by bike, from the city centre. “Riding Nelson’s trails is a yearround adventure, with sunny days with bluebird skies the norm throughout the year. The riding options include several bike parks, as well as more natural trail in both plantation forest and native bush.” Mountainbike Trails Trust

It will give us a real international presence as an attractive mountainbike destination. - Chris Mildon.

chairman Chris Mildon says the gold rating is great news for the whole region. “It will give us a real international presence as an attractive mountainbike destination”. Chris says the MTB Trails Trust paid for Jason’s visit and the $12,300 assessment. “Although it’s quite an investment, we’ve been focused on the positive regional benefits right through this process.” The Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Nelson Tasman Tourism and the Economic Development Agency, and forestry companies AFM and Hancocks, fully supported the project. Jason says thousands of mountainbikers around the world use the IMBA website to find the best destinations for riding and a gold rating could result in an influx of international tourists to Nelson. Rotorua has also gained a Gold Ride Centre status, making Nelson and Rotorua the only locations outside of the US to have gained this level of accreditation.

Marking key moments in history or travels to far away lands is often done with photographs, diaries or even scrapbooks. For Rona Holyoake it was done with teaspoons. Rona, of Stoke, was an avid teaspoon collector and when she passed away this month she left around 3000 in her collection. The teaspoons came from all over the world and commemorate many sporting events, royal occasions and other moments in history. And this Sunday they will all go up for sale.

Nelson auctioneer John Walker says Rona’s family have pulled out some teaspoons from their mother’s collection, but there will still be around 2500 teaspoons up for sale. “This is the first time I’ve done a teaspoon collection this big in my career,” says John. “Any teaspoon collector, this is their chance because just don’t get this sort of collection come up for auction very often.” John says it’s hard to put a value on such items. They sell in souvenir stores for between $7 and $10 but it’s likely he’ll auction them by the case-load.

“To put a value on it is such a hard thing. We don’t really want to split it up but we’ll have to. A small tray on Trademe goes for around $100, so this collection will be worth a bit. The collection includes a commemorative spoon from the 1983 Lions rugby tour to New Zealand, a spoon celebrating Prince William’s first birthday, as well as spoons from places like the Falkland Islands, Iceland, South Molle Island. The auction is this Sunday, August 16 at 11am at 594A Main Rd Stoke.

Origin’s ready for take off

100

Andrew Board Tomorrow Originair will take to the skies but for owner Robert Inglis the thrill won’t be seeing an Origin plane takeoff – after all it’s hardly his first, maiden flight. Originair is the latest airline under Robert’s ownership and he says months of hard work and preparation have been the exciting part for him, with this week’s first flight “just another step”. Despite his long association with aeroplanes, Robert says his first taste of flying wasn’t pleasant. “I was waiting about three days for my first born to turn up at the hospital in Motueka and I was getting a bit anxious. My fatherin-law said he was learning to fly and he said ‘come to the aero club and we’ll take you for a flight to take your mind of it’. I didn’t like it much but a month or two later I went back and did some more flying. I got a private licence, then a commercial licence.” From there, Robert operated a fleet of planes in conjunction with the Nelson Aviation College and then started flying from Motueka to Wellington before deregulation opened up competition to Air New Zealand for domestic air travel. He then started Air Nelson before selling it to Air New Zealand and later founded Origin Pacific. Robert says he has nothing to hide with that airline’s collapse, one reason why he chose to call his new airline Originair. “If we called it anything else it could be

Photo: Jacob Chandler. seen that we were trying to hide and we don’t think we’ve got anything to hide about,” he says. “We just got caught in some aero-politics that became the perfect storm and out of our control.” Origin Pacific hit trouble when Qantas pulled out of a deal to work together in the hope of buying a large share of Air New Zealand. That left Origin with leased planes that it couldn’t fill and contracts that it couldn’t break, meaning it had to fold. The Commerce Commission later ruled that Qantas couldn’t buy a stake in Air NZ. But with that behind him, Robert has assembled a new team and refurbished planes to fly again. This week’s first flight will take passengers from Nelson to Palmerston North, a route Robert knows well. “People ask ‘why Palmerston’. Well, the Palmerston North route has the classic

key requirements for an airline. There is a water barrier and it is a short sector, no terrain in the way, so it’s usually a nice, smooth flight.” He says it’s a route that has been successful for him at Air Nelson and Origin Pacific, as has the Nelson to Wellington route that will start next month. “We’re not serious about an attack on Air New Zealand on the Wellington route. It doesn’t cost us anymore for the crew to do four trips or two, so it works in nicely to do that extra service to Wellington.” Although Originair is nowhere near the size of what Origin Pacific was, Robert says it means they will be stable. “It’s hardly a big deal, it’s a very modest operation and we’re not exposed to the international markets.” Ticketing information and schedules are at www.originair.nz 

Nelson Arts Festival offers ‘biggest line-up to date’ A smorgasbord of national and global talent has been locked in for this year’s Nelson Arts Festival, making it the biggest and most spectacular line-up to date. A total of 65 shows, including seven international acts, have been secured for this year’s festival, including Australian company Casus Circus’s new work Finding the Silence, and American jazz legend David Friesen. Musical crowd pleasers SJD & The Black Quartet, Sam Manzanza and the Afrobeat Band, and Trinity Roots with their Irish friends, will also be on offer, as will a raft of celebrated New Zealand writers, including Charlotte Grimshaw, Patricia Grace and Gavin Bishop. The line-up includes almost a third of locally-produced content, including The Billboard Project where four local and two visiting artists will create works of art beside the Maitai River. Councillor Gaile Noonan says the Council is thrilled to put on such a “much-loved” arts event for Nelsonians and visitors to the region.

An American plane shot it down before it got to us. “One minute they were telling us the war was over, the next they told us to look out.” The Gambia was the New Zealand fleet’s official representative at the formal surrender, and after the signing Syd went ashore to Tokyo and remembers seeing devastation, with the only buildings left standing being the Emperor’s palace and a bridge to it. Syd says he hasn’t thought much about his unique look at the historic surrender apart from days like VJ Day. “You just get on with life, don’t you.”

While on a break from duty in New Zealand, many of the seamen went home to visit their families, but Syd was miles from his so he joined his fellow officer and friend Doug Mabin on his trip to Nelson. There Syd met and fell in love with Doug’s sister. After the war he married Lorna, returning to the UK to train as a teacher before moving to New Zealand for good in 1953. He says, although a long time ago now, he does remember parts of his time in Japan at the end of the war. “One morning at about 11 o’clock they sounded the alarm call on the loud speaker to say, ‘the war is over’. Over a five-decade teaching career Syd Massey taught a range of subjects to his students, but the end of World War 2 wasn’t just from a text book – he could tell them much more. Syd was on the HMNZS Gambia, which was in Tokyo Harbour when the Japanese surrendered and an end to World War 2 was declared. This Saturday, the 70th anniversary of that day will be commemorated in Nelson with an event at Rutherford Park, next to the Trafalgar Centre. Syd now lives in Stoke and has spent much of the past 60 years living in Nelson, as well as the West Coast, Golden Bay and Marlborough. During the start of WW2, Syd was living in England. In 1941, aged 18, he was called up to serve and initially applied for the Air Force before moving to the Royal Navy. There he served in various parts of Europe, Africa and the Pacific, before returning to the UK to train as a radio operator. In 1943 the British gave the Gambia to the Royal New Zealand Navy, but there wasn’t a New Zealander, who was a trained seaman, to operate the wireless communications onboard. So Syd, who had experience and had trained with the American frequencies and codes, was deployed from the Royal Navy and told to serve with the Kiwis. He says the Gambia made its way to the Pacific and was active in the area

Nelson College gears up for arts festival

NELSON COLLEGE ARTS FESTIVAL: Rylea Hart, on trumpet one, with the Nelson College Jazz Band, which will be performing at the school’s arts festival on Saturday night. It is the first time the school has hosted an arts festival for more than a decade and events will be running over several days from Thursday this week. Photo: Kate Russell.

Kate Russell Nelson College is set to launch into a weekend of showcasing its finest music, visual arts, media studies and drama, as part of its 2015 arts festival. This is the first major arts festival the college has held in 12 years, and was conceived because there was no joint drama production with Nelson College for Girls this year. Headmaster Gary O’Shea says the cancellation of the yearly production gave them the “perfect opportunity” to showcase all of their arts. “We planned it to coincide with our winter boarding weekend, where parents are here for a weekend of teacher interviews,” he says. “It will be a real community event where Nelson College Old Boys have also been invited.” Gary says that music and drama are prominent subjects at the college, with media studies becoming very popular over the last five years. Media students will have the opportunity to showcase their own documentaries, short films and narrative journalism. Head of music Adrienne McDowell says there will be a wide variety of music on offer, from rock bands to the college’s award-winning jazz band. “We have such great enthusiastic boys, and they have all been practicing very hard,” she says. The festival kicks off on Thursday night in The Crush Hall, which will be converted into an art gallery, followed by a short film festival. Friday night will see a drama improv/theatre sports evening take over the main hall, and Saturday night will close the festival with a variety concert, featuring an extravaganza of music. The front of the school building will also have a slide show of images and artwork projected onto it throughout the festival.

PENKETH PROPERTY LAW

Speed limit dropped from 80km to 50km outside Wakatu Estate: Could work, but after driving this road almost everyday for the last two years and seeing a lot of near misses in that time. I think the main problem is driver incompetents, I've seen a lot more near misses on that intersection caused by people going 4050kph and pissing off every other road user around them, which then causes people to get impatient and drive erratically, than I have people driving to the speed limit and being aware of their surroundings. Anton Stechman. Perhaps the council needed to give advanced warning of this. Not let people travel to work at 80kmh and then drop it to 50 after lunch with no warning of changed road speed in sight. Sue Sara.

The problem with that intersection is that nobody knows when or who is giving way. They should paint a white line across where people feed in to the main traffic flow, so that people travelling at 80kms can continue and the people coming into the traffic can wait! Problem solved! Drop it to 50km and have two roundabouts, one for Elms St and one for Saxton Field. Garry and Maree Smith. Ultra Fast Broadband coverage: No help for Cable Bay. I'm sure most of the telecommunications companies are deliberately avoiding upgrading cellphone towers to keep people paying for landlines they would most likely ditch if cell coverage was better. Also, can't see why the same charge is applied for a property that can only receive standard (aka slow) broadband to someone who is receiving cable? Properties who can only get slow broadband should be paying less for their internet, not the same prices. In effect, rural properties end up subsidising urban properties which receive better service. Johanna Fowler. Scallops back in Tasman Bay: If things are looking good in the Tasman Bay then why the hell are they going to fish there? Leave the bloody things alone! Maxine Foster. Seriously... commercial guys will obliterate it in the first season. Leave it for us recreational guys! Gavin Palfreman. Cars to be banned from Mapua wharf: Lots of car parking in the huge new car park, maybe a sixty second walk to the wharf. How would I use

the boat ramp? Is the council going to put a concrete ramp at Grossi Point? The boat ramp gets used by many and has been forgotten about. Richard Marshall. Great idea, from someone who works down there. I'm even hoping for better lighting down Aranui Rd leading to the wharf area, for the safety of diners and staff who work late during the summer months. And having to park a mile down the road so spaces are left for visitors. That'd be awesome. Janelle Thorpe. I took my 90 plus year old mum there a short time ago and had to park way up the road. Isn't it pretty much pedestrians only already? Ruth McLaren. It's a great idea. People can drop off elderly just outside the Apple Shed and park the car round the corner. Reinhard Gebhard. Think this is a fabulous idea. Will make it even more 'people friendly'. Highly recommend locals attend the Community Association meetings on the second Monday of each month (7pm in the hall). This is a great chance to hear what is happening, with councillors there to answer questions and listen to our ideas! They let us know about more parking, that is to be provided soon. Fiona BibbySmith.

A Nelson woman has taken on the “opportunity of a lifetime,” and is organising a charity concert to help raise money to rebuild school classrooms in Nepal, which were damaged in the recent earthquake. Bernie Butler is aiming to raise $4000, which is the cost to build a new classroom, through an event she has organised called ‘Music for Nepal,’ which will be held at The Freehouse on 29th August. Bernie will also be going to Nepal in October for a month to get her hands dirty helping with ‘earth-bagging,’ which is what the classrooms are made out of – bags of earth stacked up like bricks. It was only a few weeks ago that Bernie saw a post on Facebook from First Steps Himalaya, a Nelson charity, who said they were looking for volunteers to come and help in Nepal for a month. “I immediately wanted to go,” she says. “I just thought it would be an amazing thing to be part of. It really got under my skin and I wanted to challenge myself.” Bernie set out on a mission to raise money for her flights to

It only took her three weeks to raise the money. “I’m not a professional photographer or anything, but people really got behind me,” she says. “It feels like the whole community has supported me to make this possible, and special thanks go to Signature Homes and Blueberry IT.” Bernie is still getting orders for her photographs, and says that 100 per cent of the profits she raises will now go to the First Steps Himalaya charity. Bernie says that she hopes that Nelsonians will support the

cause, and come down to The Freehouse for the fundraiser. The concert will feature three Nelson bands - The Immigrants, The Saints, and the Vagrants. There will be great beer, Nepalese food for sale, and a raffle. Bernie will also be selling her photographs on the night. “We will be limited to 100 people, so people need to make sure they get there early,” says Bernie. “I really hope we can do it,” she says. “It would be nice to have a classroom from the people of Nelson.” Music for Nepal, Saturday 29th August at The Freehouse. Tickets $10 on the door.

So.....How’s it all going Wanda ?

It’s going great ! We’ve been open for four months now and business is booming.

Does Laser Hair Removal really work ?

changing for my clients, both men and women who have struggled with unwanted hair. I feel very fortunate to be able to be a part of that.

Tell us about tattoo removal Wanda, how’s that going?

Yes! (laughs Wanda) It really works. People don’t realise just how effective it can be. In as little as 4-6 treatments you can be virtually hair free. Imagine, no more waxing, shaving, plucking etc EVER. You can treat most body surfaces and my clients often say it doesn’t hurt nearly as much as they were expecting. We use the latest and best technology currently available. We can treat all skin colours, and you are left with perfect, smooth, hair free skin - no more marks, waxing irritation or ingrown hairs. And the best part is....it’s not as expensive as you think.

We are seeing unbelievable results. Laser tattoo removal is something clients may consider for a number of reasons. People change, and I want people to know that you can change who you were, into who you want to be. The decisions you make in your 20’s, aren’t always appropriate for you in your 30’s and 40’s. I use a medical grade laser. There are no scars, no marks, no permanent damage at all. Just perfect clear skin. Our number one priority here at Nelson laser Clinic is that your skin remains perfect.

Did you learn to do this locally ?

How can people find you?

No, there are actually only a handful of places in the world you can become qualified in this field. I qualified and trained at an internationally recognised laser and skin care college.

Do you have many guys coming to you ?

Yes. I have a number of guys coming to me for treatment on their chests and backs etc. It’s fantastic, and hugely rewarding to be able to help people. Often it’s literally life

100% locally owned and operated The growth of Sunrise Cleaning has led to new offices in Richmond, so that the team can continue to provide an outstanding service. Owner Bruce Farley has built the business up from nothing, and has operated successfully for over 25 years thanks to a loyal staff and the relationships he has forged with his many clients. In 1986, Bruce moved to Nelson from Auckland where he had been milking cows on the family farm. He is proud to say that he has been selfemployed since the age of 21 with school bus runs and a relief milking business. So when he arrived in Nelson, naturally working for someone else wasn’t really an option. Bruce put an ad in the local paper looking for a

small business to take on and received replies including a firewood company and a commercial cleaning company. You may think you know where this story is going, but no, Bruce didn’t take on the existing cleaning business, deciding it wasn’t a good investment. It did, however, put the idea in his head to establish a cleaning company from scratch and so Sunrise Cleaning was born. More precisely, the business began when Bruce was walking down Queen St one day and saw ANZ bank were doing renovations. He got the cleaning contract and was soon driving in from Upper Moutere every night for one and a quarter hours of work, which soon paid off as he slowly built up his cli-

Sunrise Cleaning is now based in one of the office spaces above the Richmond Mall, who also happen to be one of their clients. Bruce and the team have been there two months and everyone is excited about how the new premises will benefit the business. “I used to think that working from a home office was really cool, I could just look out my window and see rhododendrons and beautiful gardens, but I realised since moving here that we should have done this ten years ago. The separation between home and business is really nice now,” says Bruce. The business has also gone through a re-structure, so that it can operate more efficiently and better satisfy client’s requirements. Since its beginnings, Sunrise Cleaning has narrowed its cleaning services to achieve quality over quantity, and now focuses on catering to their commercial clients. Bruce says that an efficient operation is necessary to stay in the market against the national franchise opposition. This has been achieved thanks to an irreplaceable management team and hard-

Relationships are really important and the one thing I’ve enjoyed most about building the business. I really like contracts where I build up a relationship with the business, and I get sad that it seems to be declining these days,” says Bruce. “Like Nelson Pine, I can walk in there and I know all the managers, it’s the same with the Tasman District Council and the Richmond Mall, it’s like we’re part of their team, not a separate business.” Another thing that sets Sunrise Cleaning apart is their commitment to using green products. The cleaning products they use are exclusively bio-degrada-

ble and non-toxic, as the company is conscious of the impact that cleaning products have on our environment. As well as their general cleaning services, Sunrise Cleaning are more than happy to organise the removal of recycling, and can also assist with all their carpet cleaning, laundry and document destruction needs, thanks to reliable sub-contractors. While the traditional fleet of Sunrise Cleaning vans can be seen driving around town, there are a few historical motor vehicle gems in Bruce’s collection. Waka ama gaining in popularity Outrigger canoeing, also known in New Zealand as “waka ama,” is a rapidlygrowing sport in Nelson, and the local Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club offers a range of options for beginners, right through to seasoned canoeists. Club president Peter Bywater, who has been involved with the club for eight years, says that outrigger canoeing is a very social, accessible sport that is great for fitness. The club, which was formed in 2001, has around 120 members, and has doubled its membership in the past five years. “We’ve grown quite significantly,” says Peter. “We cater for a large range of ages, so there are ten year olds up to 70 year olds getting involved.” The club participates in a winter series every year, where clubs throughout the Nelson Marlborough region take turns at hosting a race every

month over the winter. The clubs involved are Maitahi, Waikawa, Golden Bay, Motueka, and Whakatu Marae. At the end of the series, the points are tallied up and the winner takes the trophy. So far this winter, they have had three races, with the last one to be held in Kaiteriteri at the end of August. “It’s a great way to keep everyone active over the winter months,” says Peter. The summer months are also busy for the club, with lots of races throughout the region, a big regatta in Kaiteriteri, and a fun day at the beach. The club also holds their own race at Nelson Lakes every February. If people want to find out more, or give outrigger canoeing a go, the club holds a club day every Sunday where people can just show up and try it out. SportS RUGBY: Nelson College First XV lost to Christchurch Boys High School 2517 in the final round-robin game of the UC Championship Crusaders secondary schools rugby series, played in Christchurch on Saturday. George finished 9 minutes 56 seconds behind the winner Jon Izaguirre of the Moviestar team. The three-week La Vuelta Espana starts on August 22. Garin College wing attack Jess Brooks leaps for a pass during her side's win over Jacks. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

A third quarter lapse cost Jacks Pro Netball in the Premier 2 game against Garin Senior A, played at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The teams traded goals in the opening stanza, and there was a considerable amount of turnover ball which did not have a high conversion rate. The college girls went into the first break with a slender 7-6 advantage. Turnovers continued to mount in the second quarter, so much so the umpires were heard to be discussing the number (18 in total, with only a miserly three converted) compared to only five goals scored apiece. Jacks goal keep Jordan Webby was in dynamic form, as she punished Garin’s cross court passing to pull in intercept after intercept. Goal defence Paula Campbell only picked up the one intercept, however she was on hand through court as she endeavoured to pressure every pass. While Garin was up 12-11 at the major break, the game was there for either team to take control of. Jacks broke the first pass of the third quarter to draw level, however Garin lifted the bar with Jess Brooks’ introduction at wing attack. Jess impressed off the line, offered a good option at second phase and worked solidly to deliver quality ball to her shooters Kate Hand and

Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz Poppy Restieaux. Poppy was particularly productive netting seven from eight, to add to Kate’s four from five. Down 15-23 with ten minutes to go, Jacks proved they were certainly not out of the game. Megan Stack moved from the wing into centre which offered a more potent attack, and she had an impressive three intercepts against her name for the final quarter. Krissy-Lee Price was a useful option at wing attack as she drove nicely onto the ball. While Garin’s final quarter was far from their best, their defensive pairing of Sarah Robinson and Mereana Haldane toiled tirelessly. Mereana in particular gained countless deflections. Celeste Dempster returned to the court at goal attack for Jacks after sitting out the third quarter. Celeste continued with her good work rate through court and had her most productive conversion rate. Hayley Bradley converted the bulk of the goals, and was on hand to rebound strongly for the second chance. While the attempts were evenly shared, with 36 each, it was Garin who claimed the 26-21 win, being their first for the championship round.
